Marjun Syderbø Kjelnæs’ novel “Sum rótskot” (En. Shooting roots) is being published Denmark in May 2023. Marjun was nominated for Nordic Council Children's and Young People Literature Prize 2021 for this strong YA novel set in Tórshavn.

"Sum rótskot" is about four teenage friends who want to give people a wake-up-call so that they will take the environmental crisis seriously. The book is in tune with the eco-critical tendencies in the literature of our time, and is highly topical. However, the book is more than just a climate novel; it is also, perhaps to an even greater degree, a story about what concerns people – both adults and the young – today. It is a book about how young people navigate in a world of challenges, dealing with such topics as climate change, screen time, alcohol abuse and grief, as well as large and complex topics that have to do with identity, sexuality, science and faith. The novel is published by BFL in 2020.

The Danish translation is by Kathrina Skarðsá who has roots in the Faroe Islands. This is her first and masterful translation of a novel. Vild Maskine is publishing the book.

Marjun Syderbø Kjelnæs is a Faroese author who is translated into several languages i.a.: Danish, French, German, English and Norwegian. Her first YA novel in Danish (Writing in the Sand) received multiple 5 star reviews in the big Danish newspapers and won the Nordic Council Children’s and Young People’s Literature prize 2011. Marjun is a trained nurse but has written a long list of books. This year she is nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize for a play and a poetry collection.
